This copy is numbered 1410. Technically this specific hardbound edition is limited to ONLY 1,700 copies as the other 300 are slipcased. HARDBOUND NEAR-MINT FLAWLESS condition First Edition 2002, 288pp, 6.0"x9.0".

This copy is SIGNED by Neil Gaiman on title page (see actual image below).

From inside flap: Here's the problem- the constraints of this format mean we have to present a linear description of Neil Gaiman. But Neil Gaiman is a multi-dimensional- as well as a multimedia- creator. So, what you read here is a shadow of a projection. Some points to determine that line- born in the UK; came to the US in 1992; lives in the Upper Midwest. He writes; he writes songs, poems, short stories, novels- both graphic and prose. He writes by himself; he collaborates with Terry Pratchett. He edits anthologies. Probably as a result of his British schooling, he writes essays- excellent ones; sometimes they sneak in as introduction, forewords, or afterwords to someone else's book. Often the book is only a launching platform into the vasty reaches of bibliospace. Oh, yes, he wrote The Sandman graphic novels. "A Midsummer Night's Dream" received the 1991 Best Short Story World Fantasy Award- imagine that, a prestigious award given to a comic book. Why are you wasting time reading this flap? Go read this book.

Neil Gaiman is most widely known for his graphic novels, short stories, and -now- his most recent novel American Gods (w/c you ought to have bought and read). Adventures in the Dream Trade shows other sides of the writer. This book is:

A journal- a web log- covering February to September 2001 (includes short entries on 9/11). This daily material was written so that his fans could see just what happens after a book is accepted. Join Neil in his proofreading, rewriting, grueling promotional tours, signing endless autographs, being polite to thoughtless people. This is a fascinating book inside the black box- a manuscript goes in and a book pops out at your neighborhood store.

Here- are some of Neil's poems and song lyrics. You have to disguise poetry as songs in many cases because everyone knows that no-one reads poetry any more. You will be particularly enamored of "How to Write Longfellow's Hiawatha." Some of the songs were written for the Flash Girls duo- Emma Bull and the Fabulous Lorraine Garland (look for them at http://www.player.org/pub/flash/flash.html).

Yes, there are some stories- stories from obscure venues- stories that Neil wrote mostly for fun. You may not have read some of these. Be glad Neil selected them for inclusino or you might never have seen them.

Essays and introductions: there's a fuzzy line between them. An introduction to another writer's stories or to an anthology can easily turn into an essay on Greek mythology or nightmares. Envy the writer who has a Gaiman introduction to add cachet to his work.

In case you're interested- the book's title came from John M. Ford who also wrote the introduction. Only fair, Neil wrote the introduction to his book when John was Boskone Guest of Honor. Neil's intro is included in this volume.
